This is Freedom Writers. It's a movie from 2007 based on a true story about a teacher and her students. There is a book the students wrote together to tell their story that the teacher had gotten published that goes into great detail on how the students spent their lives dealing with gang violence. The movie is based on a true story and pretty accurately depicts what they went through.

I recommend watching it if you can at least once and if you like it see if you can find a copy of the original book.
