Hello Everyone! Here is my reaction to "The Invisible Man" (1933) The very first Invisible Man film ever made. This one surprised me in quite a few ways, I was expecting the Invisible Man to be the good guy. Like the movie I saw when I was young; "Memoirs of an Invisible Man". This movie was a lot of fun. Its a very creative and innovative classic!!

___

"The Invisible Man"
The story follows Dr. Jack Griffin, a brilliant but unstable scientist who discovers a chemical formula that makes him invisible. After secretly testing the experiment on himself, Griffin hides in a small English village while trying to reverse the process. However, the formula has a dangerous side effect—it slowly drives him insane.
As Griffin becomes increasingly unhinged, he begins using his invisibility to terrorize the public, commit crimes, and pursue power, believing himself superior because he cannot be seen. His former fiancée, her father, and a colleague attempt to stop him before his violent ambitions escalate further.

Remember in Titanic when Old Rose saw the drawing of her younger self and she said "Wasn't I a dish?" You can see in this movie that yes she was! Gloria Stewart was 23 years old when this film was released in November 1933. She died at 100 in 2010.

This is 1933, only two years after "Frankenstein," and only 6 years after sound was added to film! Anything before 1927 is silent. It's amazing to think that they could suddenly make these films after sound was added and it really kicks off the popularity of movies! A great movie about the silent era is 2011's "The Artist." By the way that is indeed Claude Rains at the very end, the actor not only voices the character, but he is the character throughout.

Universal was not the only studio doing horror/Sci-Fi in the thirties. Paramount's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is superb. Frederic March won his first Oscar in the role. For a more light-hearted take on invisibility, you should watch The Invisible Woman from 1940 (not the unrelated film of 2013).

Gloria Stewart who was in Titanic, plays Flora. Claude Rains was fantastic as Jack the Invisible Man. Henry Travers as Dr. Cranely, was also Clarence in It's A Wonderful Life. The novel _The Invisible Man_ was published in 1897 and was very successful, as were most of Wells's novels.
Una o'Connor (the hysterical landlady) was a favorite of Universal. She is always memorable, especially in _Bride of Frankensterin._
Next you'll need to dip your feet into some of the adaptations of the novels of Jules Verne. I'd recommend the 1954 version of _20,000 Leagues Under the Sea_ starring Kirk Douglas, James Mason, and Peter Lorre; and Mike Todd's 1956 extravaganza Around the World in Eighty Days starring David Niven and Cantinflas (a famous Mexican comic actor), with cameos by a Who's Who of mid-century stars and a magnificent score by the great Victor Young.

This is the original screen adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel. It was the horror follow up to Universal Pictures 'Dracula.' James Whale is the Director and it stars Claude Rains and Gloria Stewart. Technically, it was quite an innovative film for its time period. Universal had said there were optical effects with mirrors, shot against a completely black set with walls and floors covered in black velvet to make it non-reflective. Other effects involving props moving "by themselves" are done with wires pulled by booms or dollies. The overall budget on the effects was a whopping cost for the time of $328,033. (Source: Wiki).

There are a lot, like a huge amount, of old films that are really amazingly entertaining and worth everybody’s time. Some of my favourite old horror films besides the better known ones that (I also highly recommend) are: The Old Dark House (1932), Mad Love (1935), Werewolf of London (1935), The Devil-Doll (1936), The Lodger (1944), The Body Snatcher (1945), Dead of Night (1945), Hangover Square (1945), and, House of Wax (1953).

I’m not suggesting that you react to all those in the future - although that would be great - but it’s rather obvious that you loved The Invisible Man as soon as you were a few minutes in so I feel any of these very well done old horror films are going to be your cup of tea. Thanks for making videos eh… 🎃

Fun story from Claude Rain's own granddaughter: when this film came out in theatres, he took her to go and see it, it was a cold wintery day so he was bundled up in a scarf and hat like in the film. I love this movie. It's fairly faithful to the book in the first half but expands Griffin's village based rampage in the book into a national one. Griffin does a lot more killing in the film, though he's just as homicidally inclined in the book, it's just that he's stopped as an invisible man can only do so much against a crowd of people. The film actually takes the idea of an invisible man's reign of terror from the American early sci-fi writer Philip Wylie's book 'The Murderer Invisible'. Wylie although largely forgotten was no slouch in sci-fi, and was arreseted by the FBI in 1945 as he happened to write a sci-fi story set in 1965 about Nazi conspirators making an atomic bomb, which turned out to be remarkably close in concept and effect to what Oppenheimer and his team were attempting to build out in New Mexico!

H. G. Wells understood and liked movies, and he approved and suggested changes to his novel. He was very satisfied with the eventual release.

Last comment I promise! A lot of H. G. Wells early stories and short stories involve sudden surreal and violent incidents befalling small villages and sleepy suburbs. War of the Worlds practically opens with a sudden exo-skeleton armoured martian assault with heat rays on the sleepy English suburbs. A lot of this can be put down to H. G Wells early life havin to suffer a very boring job working in a shop in a sleepy English town where he did not particularly like his customers, who could be rude or annoying. As a result he liked daydreaming terrible and amusing calamities to befall on everyone around him. His short stories are not to be missed. 'The Country of the Blind' written in 1904 is a fun inversion of The Invisible Man, where a mountaineer slips and falls into an isolated valley populated entirely by blind people who have built their own little civilisation. He arrogantly feels that being the only one able to see he can rule over it, but learns to his cost that the people within who have adapted to their condition are not in any sense disabled, but fully effective.

Yes, in the original HG Wells novel, Griffin was a nasty piece of work who wanted to use his invisibility to take over the world. In fact, the original book didn't even give him the excuse of the drug driving him mad; he was apparently just evil to start with.

This was a great choice. Claude Rains, was the body AND the voice of the Invisible Man. You've seen him in other films, probably, as he later played the corrupt police chief in "Casablanca" and the Nazi businessman who spars with Cary Grant in Hitchcock's great "Notorious." H.G. Wells, who wrote the book and came up with the concept, was still alive and had to approve the script, so it's very faithful to the novel. And yes, the concept originated with the novel. The director, James Whale, also made "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein." He was the greatest horror director ever. Gloria Stuart, the fiancee, later played Kate Winslet as an old lady in "Titanic." (I knew Gloria!) Henry Travers, the older scientist, played Clarence the angel in "It's a Wonderful Life." He's also in Hitchcock's "Shadow of a Doubt," which you would love.

Oh hon - of course it's a horror movie (and sci-fi) :D. This was Claude Rains' film debut and he was very upset that he would not be shown onscreen until the literal final frame but regardless it's one helluva debut - his voice alone crackles with manic intensity and even his whispering moments with Gloria Stuart resonates his theatricality as an actor. Yes the novel came before the film as it is an adaptation of HG Wells' story :D Heck you even mentioned it when you saw his name LOL Lordy. Directed by James Whale (who did FRANKENSTEIN & the first sequel THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN - both you so need to see) and setting Universal promptly as the studio producing quality genre films henceforth. The visual f/x are still astounding (for Rains they ensconced him in black velvet and then transposed one shot over another to give the illusion of his transparency). Hope you continue to explore the classics for SpookySeason and beyond Cam xoxo

Two things. Claude Rains played the invisible man, and yes, that was his famous voice. He was also in Casablanca and walks off with Humphrey Bogart at the end. He also played The Phantom of the Opera in 1943 the first color version, and he was a British officer stationed in Cairo in Lawrence of Arabia. Gloria Stewart, who played his girlfriend in Invisible Man was also the old woman in Titanic the one with Leonard Decaprio. The 1933 film is science fiction, but very scary, was the very good recent remake.

The Invisible Man is another entry in James Whale's filmography of Gothic Horror of which I only know 3:

Frankenstein
The Invisible Man
The Bride of Frankenstein

The latter two films include bits of Whale's sardonic humor. I wish there was more of his work.

The Invisible Man is an updated version of the Ring of Gyges story from Plato’s Republic. Gyges, a poor shepherd, finds a magic ring which he can use to become invisible. Using the ring, he gains the favor of the king, seduces the queen, plots with her to murder the king and seizes the throne. The story explores the idea that people are only moral because they fear getting caught. An invisible man has no fear of being caught, and so can indulge in every crime and depravity without consequence.

They specifically used Anderson's Pea Soup as the vomit. In the 90's we went to the original Anderson's plant and attached restaurant near San Diego and they actually had celebrity memorabilia and photos from the Exorcist displayed.

There's a great book on the actual possession and exorcism the novel and this film is based on, 'Possessed' by Thomas B. Allen. It includes diary entries from the priests involved.

The Invisible Man (1933) and the 1953 version of The War of the Worlds, two fast paced, no-nonsense, straight-forward, story driven films. They still hold-up today. 👽Great!

Fantastic reaction! The director of this film, James Whale, who also directed the first Frankenstein, was ahead of his time and unpredictable in the way he developed his works.

This is my favorite Universal classic horror movie, thank you so much Cami for the reaction. It’s my favorite because the special effects are groundbreaking, Claude Rains voice is auditory crack, but also the deadliest universal horror monster is just a man: not the king of the undead (Dracula), not a cursed lykanthrope (Larry Talbot), not a cursed undead priest (Imhotep), not an abomination brought to life (Frankenstein’s creature), and not a prehistoric organism (Black Lagoon), just an insane man with an incredible power.

I heard a story that HG Wells almost didn't want this movie to be made. Basically he could see potential in film but he wasn't comfortable with his own books being adapted into films

Also the egomania he goes through in this film was only written for the film. He wasn't an egomaniac in the book

Also the role of the Invisible Man was first offered to Boris Karloff (the Frankenstein Monster) but he turned it down. Then the role was offered to Colin Clive (the guy who played Dr Frankenstein) but he turned it down too. Then finally it was offered to Claude Raines and he accepted it

This is so…refreshing Cami, thank you for taking on the classic films. I remember reading the novel as a kid then watching this around high school age on a late night weekend show called “The All Nightmare Movie” out of Savannah, Georgia. Don’t recall who the guy was but he played a different film every weekend, especially the classics like this. [if you would allow me a suggestion, I have one for the upcoming Veterans Day called “The Best Years of Our Lives”. Would really like to see your reaction to that.]
