That was solid!

I actually thought the casting was good when I saw the trailer....until I saw Bison. They cast a bony, comedy geek to play one of the most feared game bosses in fighting game HISTORY? I know topping Raul Julia was impossible, but they didn't even TRY.

Dude...Raul Julia was even bonier due to his bout with Cancer.
And even when he didn't have Cancer, he was never buff looking. Mind you, his comedic portrayal was nothing like Bison anyway even if some people found it enjoyable, or rather, the only enjoyoable aspect of that 1994 movie.

But thats all okay because if you know the history of the creation of Major Bison (originally "Vega" in Japan)", you would know why they cast Julia and why they now cast David.

During development of SFII, artist "Akiman" and producer Noritaka Funamizu of Capcom, gave him a placeholder name before they landed on "Vega"

That placeholder name was "Washizaki"

General Washizaki was a villain character from the 1987 to 1990 manga Ricki-Oh

Akiman literally traced a picture pf Washizaki and used it as the character portrait for Vega/Bison in SFII character select screen. That stayed in the final game.

Riki-Oh also got an anime OVA on June 25, 1989 and August 24, 1990 which featured General Washizaki.

There was also a live action adaptation but that didn't feature him.


General Washizaki himself was inspired by the Japanese imperial Army occult villain sorcerer General Yasunori Kato of the 1983 light novel Babylon Tokyo (Teito Monogatari), which later got a manga adaptation, Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis in 1987, followed by a live action movie and sequel in 1988 and 1989.

There was also a Doomed Megalopolis anime OVA that came out in 1991.


It could also be said the look of General Kato, General Washizaki and indirectly, Major Bison, came from the character Brocken Jr from the manga Kinnikuman aka Ultimate Muscle, which came out in 1981.

Even the fighting game World Heroes honors that character (Brocken Jr) with the character "Brocken" who is a cyborg, which then is pulling influence from General Stroheim from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Arc 2.

And so when that live action adaptation of Babylon Tokyo, aka Tokyo: The Last Megalopolis came out, one of the breakthrough and most memorable characters was General Yasunori Kato played by actor Kyosuke Shimada.

Shimada had a tall lankly look and the makeup artists gave him a ghoulish appearance.

This movie got a lot of accolades and praise in Japan.

As such, this also then helped in the inspiration behind the creation of Vega/Bison, because Kato is a villain that craves occult power and uses body possession, much akin to Bison's "psycho power" and obsession with gaining energy from other people and using them possession wise for his bidding (like Cammy and the dolls)

Around the same time, Raul Julia starred as Gomez Adams in 1991 Addams Family movie which got a sequel in 1993.

While Street Fighter live action movie was in production, at the same time so was Street Fighter II the Animated movie.

In that anime movie, Bison had some sort of a redesign.
He was made to look away bigger and more buff than his SFII pixel art.

This new makeover would permeate into the Street Fighter Alpha game series and subsequent Street Fighter games after it (EX series, SF4,5,6) as well as the Street Fighter Victory anime series and the Western cartoon series from the mid 90s

So its in my opinion that when they went searching for an actor to play as Bison in the 1994 movie, because of Shimada's performance as Kato being such an impression, they opted for someone who could physically emulate that ghoulish lanky look and so they picked Julia.

And so with Street Fighter 2026, hiring David Dasmachian is a call back to Kato/Shimada, and Julia.

The guy playing "Joe" is MMA former UFC champion Alexander “Alex” Volkanovski. And thats a small role at that.

The girl playing Juli is Rayna Vallandingham who played Zara in Cobra Kai and Leticia in the 2015 film Underdog Kids

Orville Peck, a country singer, makes his acting debut here as Vega

Olivier Richters plays Zangief. He’s the Dutch bodybuilder and actor known as “The Dutch Giant,” previously seen in Reacher and Black Widow.

Everyone else, Ken, Ryu, Chun Li, Dhalsim, Bison, are also seasoned actors (yes that includes 50 Cent (this is his 29th movie)

​@ItsBudgiecat Even if he was bony, he still looked buff due to his costume. And it wasnt even how he looked that made him imposing, it was how he ACTED. He ACTED like he was a feared villain, while everyone else acting like what that movie was, a dumb video game movie. But he only took that role because his kids loved the game, so he took it seriously. The new movie made Bison a joke, just like everyone else.

David Dasmachian spoke highly of Raul Julia, citing him as an inspiration. He is also a huge gaming fan.

He briefly talks about Raul Julia here when questioned. He said he hopes Raul is looking down with pride.

Anywho, no Raul did not look 'buff' in the suit.
I believe in the third act he gets a power up and his suit expands but thats about it.

Not only that, but you either weren't around in 1995 or have selective memory because just as you are bashing David Dasmachian now, so too were many people not happy with Raul as Bison as they felt his depiction was too comedic and not representative of the character.
To each their own of course since opinions are subjective, but don't alter history now claiming that everyone loved his performance.

Even the 1993 Super Famicom Street Fighter II commercial hired a Japanese actor to play as Bison/Vega, and he was not buff.

Like I said, the character got thr redesign on the 1994 animated movie which ran adjacent in development of the live action movie.

So as I said this 2026 movie is pulling from the 1994 movie and original 1991 game as well as understanding Bison’s influential roots: Yasunori Kato, Kyosuke Shimada, Washizaki and Brocken Jr.

Especially since Kato, thin in frame, uses occult power to manipulate and possess people and pull power from them as so does Bison which is exactly the plot of his new SF movie and motivations for David's Bison

Something tells me you have no knowledge of those characters or that 1988 movie starring Shimada. I believe its still on Tubi.

I would also go play Kinnikuman Grand Prix for PS2, World Heroes and watch Riki-Oh OVA and Doom Megalopolis OVA

Everything else was bad

Exactly, everyone just needs to accept it for what it is, extreme camp and humor, with fantastic action sequences! Everyone dogged Scott Pilgrim, and now it’s a cult classic

@MatthewTho25from the anime and the comics, yea there is a dramatic element that could have been tapped into. And I’m not saying that there isn’t some camp that couldn’t have been played into. Mortal Kombat 2 had some campy elements but going all in on the camp isn’t all that palatable.

I’ve always thought that the easiest and most effective way to tell the SF story, is to produce a sequel to the animated movie. Not the Alpha version…a Street Fighter story covering III & IV, in one movie. What really made that movie was the soundtrack too. Both original and US versions were 🔥.

I didn't even know Street Fighter had comics. It had to have been a game first. I think the 1st one had Sagat as a final boss and you could only be Ken or Ryu, and that was before the NES

The movie was trash. I couldn’t get through the first 20 minutes and I walked out. I didn’t care if I did pay for it.😢

I've always said this about videos game adaptation in theaters. The cast is first thing to look at or critique. The acting has to correlate with with that shit man lol.

They’re probably the same people who said Superman (2025) when it came out, was “good” or “one of the best films they’ve ever seen”, but it was slop, and they tried to act like it was better than it actually is in the moment, and try to look for every tiny detail that they can so they can give the “good” movie credit so they don’t get called a “hater”. You’re free to have your own opinion, but that doesn’t mean your opinion is always right. I’m not saying Street Fighter (2026) is as bad as Superman (2025) was, but it was certainly not as good as most people on the internet are letting on rn.
