Kickboxer is also a very similar story to the real life story of Rick Roufus and Duke Roufus when older brother Rick faced a Muay Thai fighter for the first time. It completely changed their martial arts training from that point on.

I like how he used his long time friend as the main villain, and if anyone still doesn't know who Tong po is? He was in bloodsport, the guy who Bolo broke his leg, and in lionheart the guy who broke Van Damme rib in the hole and one who started to clap out of two who was chasing him, Michel Qissi....Van Damme training partner and friend, the both of them wanted to make it to America and become movie stars and they did make it.

Most likely based on it. Heard Van Damme mention it once I think.
Rufus's fight with the Thai Boxer was in 1988, Kickboxer came out in September 1989 , JCVD knew of that fight and loosely based Kickboxer on it.

Two thing that always bothered me about this movie. I was a big Dennis Alexio fan. They put him in a wheelchair the whole movie. He deserved better than that. Plus, what the hell was JCVD training in? It wasn't Muay Thai or Muay Boran. It looked like a mix of karate and tai chi.

He was a sight to see. His name was Dennis "the Terminator" Alexio. They all had names, Dennis the Terminator, Bill Superfoot, Bad Brad, Don the Dragon, Benny the Jet....that's why a lot of these guys claiming full contact didn't have one. If they didn't have a name, or couldn't produce actual full contact reel, we knew they were point fighters.

Regardless, kickboxing got the exposure it needed as Muay Thai is only one aspect and it wasn't as popular.

@jonb2756 Yeah because he shaved his head and made to loo Thai. You can look up the actor in blood sport and it's the same guy in the credits if you look up his IMDB.

Remember my brother had this on vhs … but it had scenes which modern versions don’t seem to have. There is a very powerful and emotional hospital scene between Kurt and his brother and also Eric’s voice is different…. Can’t seem to find this version of the movie anywhere now

@ck552 to be honest! There isn’t any Muay Thai element in this movie! But the places where it has been shooted are ancient Muay Thai fields.

Tong Po is also Sean Paredes in Bloodsport, Moustafa in Lionheart (Wrong Bet in Australia) as one of the legionnaires chasing Van Damme.

Tong Po's real life brother was the main opponent in Lionheart as Attila, the Mongolian fighter in The Quest and was also a character in The Order.
