Hello Everyone here is my reaction to "The Wolf Man" (1941) as we continue our journey through the classic Universal Monster Movies! I cant wait to watch more, Its been so fun to dive into these films with you, I especially enjoyed the effects and scenery in this one!

THE WOLF MAN -
When his brother dies, Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney) returns to Wales and reconciles with his father (Claude Rains). While there, he visits an antique shop and, hoping to impress Gwen (Evelyn Ankers), the attractive shopkeeper, buys a silver walking cane. That same night he kills a wolf with it, only to later learn that he actually killed a man (Bela Lugosi). A gypsy (Maria Ouspenskaya) explains that it was her son, a werewolf, that he killed, and that Larry is now one himself.

Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein was actually a good movie. Lon Chaney reprised his role of the Wolfman, Bela Lugosi played Dracula. It does have some silly moments, but the monsters do not disappoint. Definitely worth the watch. Also Great reaction!

When I was growing up every Saturday we had “Creature Double Feature” on tv at noon with every old (and not so old) monster movie you can think of.
And every Saturday I was hoping they’d be showing these Universal monster movies. So, I’ve been really looking forward to seeing these videos.

A thing about the look of this movie; the old fog machines burnt oil, so it’s basically exhaust! It was hard to breathe in and apparently left an oily coating on everything, but it looks so cool.

Would love to see your reaction to the Marvel Special Presentation: "Werewolf By Night" (2022).
You don't need to have seen other Marvel movies, to watch it. It's a self-contained project, exploring the supernatural/mystical side of Marvel.
Definitely recommend watching the original black & white version. They released a version in color but, since the project was heavily influenced by "The Wolf Man" (and other horror movies of that time), the black & white version works better for what they were going for.

Evelyn Ankers really suffered while making this film. There was a mishap involving fog in the climactic fight scene in the woods where Ankers (playing Gwenn) was told to faint and stay on the ground until the director yelled "cut", but in the of heat filming the scene the crew forgot about her and she was left on the ground breathing in the fog chemicals which caused her to eventually pass out. She was only rescued by a crewman who nearly tripped over her when the scene was done, In a scene that was eventually cut out of the movie, a real bear was supposed to wrestle with the werewolf. The bear broke loose on the soundstage and chased her up into the rafters where one of the electricians rescued her.

A horror classic directed by George Waggner and starring Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains, and Ralph Bellamy. Stories about the makeup and transformation scenes have become legendary and are mostly apocryphal. The transformation of Chaney from man into a monster was certainly laborious; the entirety of the makeup took five to six hours to apply and an hour to remove. The 'Wolf Man' is one of three top-tier Universal Studios monsters without a direct literary source. The others are 'The Mummy' and the 'Creature from the Black Lagoon.' 'The Wolf Man' inspired numerous sequels and some spoofs as well. Thanks Cami.🙂

Universal often re-used the same actors in their horror pictures like Lugosi. Claude Rains was also the main character in the Invisible Man even though you only briefly see him at the very end. Evelyn Ankers was in several too like this and Ghost of Frankenstein. Seems like they usually put her in pictures with Lon Chaney Jr. and from what I've heard, off set, those two did not get along at all, lol. When I was a young child I'd watch these on Saturday afternoons in the 70's and have loved them ever since. These and Abbott & Costello movies and others like the giant bug movies of the 50's. Later I'd watch them on late night tv in my teens as they were presented by our local horror host, Sammy Terry, lol.

Bela, is Bela Lugosi, played Dracula. Claude Rains played the Invisible Man, as Sir John Talbot. Also played Renault in Casablanca. Patric Knowles who plays Frank, plays the Doctor in Frankenstein Meets The Wolf Man. He played Will Scarlet in the Aventures of Robin Hood. Claude Rains played Prince John. Lon Chaney Jr. would play the Wolfman in 3 more films. He would wind up playing Son of Dracula, and the Mummy. Which wound up making him typecast playing Monster roles.

Most people think of Claude Rains as Captain Renault in Casablanca but he did a number of horror movies, most notably, The Phantom of the Opera in 1943. He also did a rather clever British horror movie in 1935 titled The Clairvoyant (aka The Evil Mind in the USA) which co-starred Fay Wray of King Kong fame. Patric Knowles (Frank) played Will Scarlet in The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1939.

The Wolf man was one of my favorites
He's played here by
Lon Chaney Jr
Whose father was silent film legend Lon Chaney Sr
He played the original Phantom of the Opera.

There was always that tragic element to the Wolf Man's story as he's played as a good man who doesn't want to harm anyone but is cursed to kill in his werewolf form

Cami, after you watch "Frankenstein," "The Bride of Frankenstein" and "The Son of Frankenstein," you need to watch "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man!" You see, there was no way to kill the Wolf Man back then, because while Larry Talbot saw the pentagram sign, Universal saw the $ sign! In the end, the sequel wins!

Lon Chaney Jr. was really a fine actor, but was only given limited parts - probably because of the connection with his famous father. Lon Chaney Sr. was known as "the man of 1000 faces" because of mastery of makeup effects. Lon Jr. was really named Creighton Chaney, but the studio wanted to make the most of his relationship. This makeup was created by the great Jack pierce, who also did Frankenstein's monster, the mummy, and so on. He was the makeup king at Universal. And those wonderful soundstage outdoor sets, shrouded in mist and twisted trees. Those old Universal films had a look of their own.

FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLF MAN (1943) was in heavy rotation on Indpls late night tv's Nightmare Theater throughout the sixties, and has been a cult classic for a long time (one of my favorites). "Were" is old English for 'Man', so Werewolf = Man Wolf, or Wolfman. Claude Rains (Sir John Talbot) just increases the quality of every picture he's in. @leftcoaster67 you are right; he wasn’t. He was rather in SON OF FRANKENSTEIN.

I think the commenter was confusing Warren William, who played Dr Lloyd in this, for Basil Rathbone. And to be fair, the accent, the mustache and the way he played the Doctor here, reminded me a bit of Rathbone also. Warren Williams is one of my favorite actors. He played Perry Mason in a few movies about the fictional lawyer, as well as some other great parts, both good guys and bad guys and everything in-between, including playing a version of Sam Spade (with his name changed to Ted Shane), in a bad comedy version of THE MALTESE FALCON (before the classic one starring Humphrey Bogart), titled SATAN MET A LADY, co-starring Bette Davis. He also played another detective in a movie series, “The Lone Wolf”, an ex-safe cracker, Michael Lanyard turned detective. He also played detective Philo Vance, at least once for THE GRACIE ALLEN MURDER CASE. He was a big star in the precode era of Hollywood, playing lots of rogues, shyster lawyers etc.

Chaney reprised the tragic Larry Talbot role in several related films. He took on the acting challenge (read: it’s paid work and under contract), of all the other monsters (except the Creature), Dracula, The Mummy, and the good ole Frankenstein’s monster. He had other non-monster roles, his performance in Of Mice and Men is remarkable.

Charming reaction. Although this was the first Wolf Man movie with Lon Chaney Jr, it was NOT Universal's first werewolf movie, which was "Werewolf of London."
Lon Chaney Jr, like his father, was a great actor. Before this, he was in "Of Mice and Men" and after this, he was a supporting actor in "High Noon," maybe the best Western ever made.
Claude Rains, who plays the Wolf Man's father, had previously played The Invisible Man, which was the funniest Universal horror film and one of the best. Rains, if you're trying to place him, also starred with Ingrid Bergman in two great movies: "Casablanca" (which also starred Humphrey Bogart) and Hitchcock's great "Notorious" (which also starred Cary Grant).

Actors back then were generally under contract to a studio. Most of the actors you see in Universal films were contract players there. That's the same reason you tend to see a lot of the same actors in Warner Bros. gangster and war films.

On the contrary, Universal obviously wanted to style him as a second "Man of a Thousand Faces" (though largely within the horror genre), but he also had supporting roles in classics like HIGH NOON (1952) and THE DEFIANT ONES (1958), and many other films in a variety of genres (notably Westerns).

Frankenstein meets the Wolfman is the sequel to this movie ( and to Ghost of Frankenstein ). It's the first time that different monsters were merged together into a storyline. Therefore they share an existence.

As you explore the Universal Monsters, you will meet the same actors over again...Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney, Jr. are just a few. They were the icons of the day.

This movie went through several revisions, which explains why Bela changed into an actual wolf while Larry changed into a wolf man. Also the original story line suggested that the physical changes were just in Larry's mind, which also explains why there is so much psycho-babble in the story.

Props to Jack Pierce who created most of the Universal Monsters make-up including the Wolf Man and Frankenstein's monster.

Once again a great reaction. I am really enjoying these older films and the way you are appreciating them.

God bless.

I agree. The issue regarding the clothing, as well as the more canonical appearance of the monster that bites the protagonist, is something the remake, for instance, doesn't have. That said, in my opinion, the remake went overboard with the violence and the rewriting of the plot. For me, the beauty of these early works lay in their focus on dialogue, leaving the rest to the viewer's imagination. Nowadays, they show too much; yet, what is truly frightening is what remains unseen.

Yes, the story continues seamlessly in "Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man" with the "Ghost of Frankenstein" in between where Bela Lugosi's character Igor is introduced and whose brain is implanted into the Monster, allowing Lugosi to play the Monster in "Frankenstein meets the Wolf Man". The best Monster sequel IMO.

I can relate! About 11 or 12, after seeing the Wolf Man when I was 7, I was petrified, stepping out of a garage with the Full Moon rising above the woods in front of me. I was literally frozen in place, looking up at that huge white orb and "Knowing" that The Wolf Man was right there in the woods about to devour me! One of the scariest moments of my life, and all happening, wide awake "In my own mind!"

I greatly appreciate your reactions to these classic movies Cami. I would absolutely love to see your reaction to the hidden 70's Gothic horror gem The Legend of Hell House. Written by legendary Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, The Twilight Zone), this film is the ultimate masterclass in high tension and gothic horror.
It has:
**The Ultimate Science vs Supernatural Clash
**Incredible Character Dynamics. Very good character driven film.
**Great acting. Phenomenal performances by Pamela Franklin and Roddy McDowell.
If you liked The Haunting, I believe you will love this film.

Werewolves are one of the oldest and widely distributed myths in history. Every ancient culture throughout the world had a version of it, the main difference being the type of animal the person changed into. In western, white Europe, wolves were seen as a scourge to people's livestock and seen as evil and a thing to be destroyed so that is the myth that followed to the new world and became popular. The Werepanda, or Foxman, doesn't seem to have as much cache.

I made it known to friends and family long ago that, when I die, I want someone to recite the old gypsy's speech about "The way you walked was thorny", just because I've always thought it sounded so cool and, if I'm wrong and we do have souls, maybe hearing that will settle mine a little.

Yeah, the original movie never said a full moon, it talked about autumn while the wolvesbane blooms.... which is funny because it was typically considered a ward against werewolves... probably because it's a poison... and I suspect it was used to poison normal wolves.

'The Wolfman', Lon Chaney Jr. as Larry Talbot/the wolfman and Evelyn Ankers/as Gwen Conliffe did not get along very well with each other during the filming. Apparently, he kept pulling her hair during the breaks of the filming just to annoy her. There were about 4 or 5 sequels of the Wolfman with Lon Chaney Jr. His last one as the wolfman was 'Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein' (1948) with Bela Lugosi as Dracula and Glenn Strange as Frankenstein's monster, a horror/comedy film, which did very well in its theatrical release and to this very day it is a very popular film. I do hope you can do a reaction to that film. It is hilarious, and a bit scary for young kids. It scared me a bit in 1961/1962 when I was a kid watching it on TV. Cheers!
