Why Huge Movies Keep Opening on December 18 #shorts

Avatar opened on December 18 (2009). So did Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002). Why that date? It starts the Christmas fortnight: 7 of the 10 biggest box office weeks since 1997 were December weeks (our count, Box Office Mojo), and December movies keep selling because the holidays keep going. Titanic made 21x its opening weekend. So this year, Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday both picked December 18. Dunesday.
