Where does the word "magazine" come from? Arabic makhzan, "storehouse", from khazana, "to store up". It passed into Italian as magazzino and French as magasin, then into English in the 1580s as a store for gunpowder and weapons (still the "magazine" of a gun). In 1731, The Gentleman's Magazine described itself as a storehouse of knowledge, giving us the modern periodical sense.
