It's been legal since day one of our country. But you're right, it's an old show long before recording. Police was a normal thing to do. Remember it's only 10 years ago that cop started getting filmed regularly and they've had to learn the rules for it because they always failed lol. Only just recently within the past few years have cups all collectively gotten the memo that it's completely legal to record them

And the cops will lie to you and hide behind their qualified immunity to try and get you to stop. Now they’re pushing politicians to pass β€œhalo” laws that would push back anyone who would try to record them, keeping them away from the officers. In New York they’re doing this, and they’ve even pushed and gotten the courts to rule that you can’t record in the public areas of their precincts, despite those precincts also being public buildings. Those same prosecutors who argued that civilians can’t record in police precincts have also been using recordings made by civilians to go after police misconduct

Yeah... what a crock.

There are entire groups of people here on YouTube whose entire channels consist of recording cops in public. It isn't illegal, and you don't have to tell them you're recording.

This is just some TV guy writing a script and not knowing how those laws work. Recording people in public has been legal since the dawn of portable recording equipment.

I disagree... you should also tack on corruption, and any other charges they tried to get pinned on the victim. They should also be fined up to $10,000 and be forced to pay all legal fees. And when I sat they, I mean any cop involved. Not the state, not the department, but the individuals. And if they can not pay, it should be paid off with the police pention fund. That way cops will police other cops because thier pension is on the line.

servants are slaves, slaves are ppl thats been kidnapped and sold in human trafik, being a police officer is more like an volunteer to bring justice and law to the ppl, tho lets be honest alot of ppl does it cause they think they will get power over others which they dont and U especially dont have power over any. well unless u have slaves i guess

Sounds to me like you don’t even know our countries history either. Indentured servants were paid in land after they served. There were also African Americans that owned slaves.

It's always been legal in constitutionally within your rights to record police officers they couldn't make a law stopping it because responsibility is a two-way street a judge and a lawyer would tell you the same thing legal responsibility is on the citizen and on the officer how can they put in a report that you did something that you may not have done but you wouldn't be allowed to record them doing something to you that would make any sense that creates corruption inside the law it has always been legal to record them don't let any a****** cop tell you otherwise a lot of cops won't admit it but during an unlawful arrest you are allowed to use deadly force to stop them from arresting you illegally that's some s*** that they'll never admit to cuz I'll still arrest you for killing a police officer even though you were protecting yourself from an unlawful arrest

@jameswest9261 While I agree that many have been detained / jailed for these things, it doesn't make it illegal.

And I'm pretty sure the qualified immunity argument is long gone on this. If a cop arrests someone because they are recording in public, the cop is open to a lawsuit as recording is now a clearly established right.

It has been held by the Supreme Court that you are allowed to film in public because there is no expectation of privacy. You can do so as long as you are not directly interfering with official business. The teenager can record all of the interaction he wants.

Recording an officer is NOT a crime, it is implied that being a public servant means they have no expectation of privacy when on the job.

Now. Now there isn't. In 2011, a man was arrested in Boston for recording police under a wiretapping law. He was convicted, and it had to go to a federal appeals court to have it overturned. Glik v. Cunniffe(2011) is the case.

Citizens have the right to record police when they are interacting with them. The truth of the matter is, if a cop doesn't want you recording them, they're dirty & demand a supervisor.

@danielzimmerman2440 all 50 states require police to wear body cams at this point. That video is also required by law to be released to those involved with a freedom of information request, and to the general public after the investigation concludes.

@timmahh_jimmahh hey nit wit the supreme court ruled you have 0 expectation of privacy in public, even in two party consent state public areas are legal to record and even in private areas government employees like cops have 0 legal right to decline being recorded as they are public servants and their actions are allowed to be audited by the public.

When recording in a PUBLIC area (e.g. highway) you are, in most cases, within your legal rights to record without 2-party consent.
