Arab travelers arrived in 947 CE, ending Maldives' isolation
Arab travelers arrived in 947 CE, ending the Maldives' centuries of isolation. The scattered atolls of the Maldives faced their first foreign visitors. The chain spans 26 atolls from Ihavandhippolhu to Addu. Yet the capital Malé, the King's Island, kept power firmly in local hands. This moment marked the start of the Maldives' recorded history. From there the islands slowly entered the wider Indian Ocean world.
