Arab travelers marked the Maldives' first outside contact

Arab travelers began visiting the islands, marking the first outside contact. The Maldives, a scattered archipelago in the Indian Ocean. Its chain stretches across 26 atolls from Ihavandhippolhu in the north to Addu in the south. Yet the capital, Malé, sits on the tiny "King's Island", housing most of the population. It concentrates the nation’s population and administration in one spot. That contact opened the Maldives to the wider world.
