Arab travelers opened the Maldives to recorded history in 947 CE
Arab travelers arrived in 947 CE, marking the Maldives’ first recorded foreign contact. The scattered islands had lived in isolation for thousands of years. Its 26 atolls stretch from Ihavandhippolhu in the north to Addu in the south. Instead of remaining unknown, the archipelago entered the historical record. That entry began a legacy of outside influence on Maldivian culture. Today, the Maldives is known worldwide, a legacy of that 947 CE encounter.
