Arab travelers first reached the Maldives in 947 CE

Arab travelers arrived in 947 CE, marking the first recorded outside contact. The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls spanning the equator in the Indian Ocean. Its atolls stretch from Ihavandhippolhu Atoll in the north to Addu Atoll in the south. Yet people had lived there for over 2,500 years before any outside visitors arrived. It kept the Maldives largely unknown to the wider world for millennia. Today, Malé, once the King's Island, is the bustling capital of the nation.
