Arab travellers found the Maldives in 947 CE

Arab travellers found the islands in 947 CE. The Maldives is an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, southwest of India and Sri Lanka. Its chain of 26 atolls stretches across the equator from Ihavandhippolhu to Addu Atoll. Despite 2,500 years of habitation, documented outside contact began only then. This marked the start of the islands' integration into global trade and history. Today, Malé serves as the capital, traditionally called the King's Island.
