Arab travellers ended the Maldives' isolation in 947 CE

Arab travellers arrived in 947 CE, ending the islands' isolation. The Maldives, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, had been inhabited for over 2,500 years. The country's chain of 26 atolls stretches across the equator. Prior to this contact, the islands remained largely unknown to the outside world. This event marked the beginning of documented interaction with global trade routes. The ancient royal dynasties continued to rule from Malé, the capital city.
