His gangster roles terrified movie audiences across America, and the man playing them secretly wanted to be a song-and-dance man. Why did James Cagney hate the very parts that made him famous?

A docker's son from Manhattan's Lower East Side, Cagney ground through newspaper offices, pool halls, and vaudeville chorus lines until 1931's The Public Enemy made him Warners' number one tough guy overnight.
The grapefruit in Mae Clarke's face became the most famous breakfast in movies, and the type stuck. Cagney bristled: he was a hoofer from the stage, and playing killers risked becoming one act forever.

Considering all the aspiring actors who never made it, maybe a little gratitude for those roles that got you where you wanted to be is in order.

Cagney was a genuine gentleman and a great actor. Playing the "Badass" or tough guy was not him at all. He'd be the first to tell you that. Watch him in "The Gallant Hours". That was the tough guy role he looked up to.
