As an filipino person who was adopted by white people, I can truthfully say that my parents have legit told me things like this. I don't mind the curious questions/assumptions because I don't have it as bad as black people adopted into white families. But hearing that I can't have long hair, or can't dress a certain way, or that I have to be mindful of how I should act just because I minorly look hispanic, it didn't affect me greatly or anything, but it does sit in the back of my mind, especially when watching a clip like this.

We are welcoming people. We aren't always welcomed. Proximity does not make others understand.

These are conversations that must be met with transparency. You (generally speaking) don't get to tell me you are not hurting me when I am telling you that you are. That lets me know you either don't understand or you don't care. It can't be both.

You have to want to understand so you stop the behavior.
