I can’t stand the kids on their phones the entire movie, we need to have lockers where we all lock away our phones at theaters and concerts

Sadly, great movies failed to attract the crowd such as Digger and Wildwood. I just can get past the fact that the vast majority of the people seems to be only interested in movies related to characters or worlds they already know about without never ever trying new things…

it’s not just blockbusters either, cuz a24’s having by far their best financial year by several miles. even backrooms aside, the drama crossed $100 million, and lance oppenheim’s films are doing great numbers too

and of course, a 26 year old turn an original screenplay and a million dollars into half a billion with one of my favorite movies ever. we’re eating good this year lol

Only if you don’t factor in rises in tickets prices and general inflation. The number of actual tickets sold and therefore people going to the movies is still on a downward trend.

I went to more movies this year than I have in decades(18.) I go to the old man early bird showings. Around ten bucks. I sit in the wheelchair aisle, sometimes my wife comes, but it depends on what I'm seeing. It's been such a nice experience. Concerts got too expensive, but I still wanted a couple hours of escape from the world.

Obsession and backrooms were not known entities, just cause two niche movies with large budgets flopped doesn’t mean there’s not a hunger for new and original. There’s just less of a hunger for stop motion and Tom cruise than before… that being said, they can still be a success in secondary markets, Shawshank was a cinema flop…

We're all broke noone can afford:
Concerts: yet big bands are selling like crazy
Vacations: my country is in the heart of Europe, school ends and all the radios keep reporting is the wait time at the borders because of traffic jams, and airports are full too.
Movies: biggest box office than it's been in years and that before Dune and avengers whatever is coming out

The cost of movie theaters are not that bad, it’s the quality of movies that have been coming out, back around 08-12 range i recall there being like 2 maybe 3 big movies every month, right now checking my local theaters page there’s 3 movies that I even saw advertising for on there, and two of them I heard weren’t that good

Box office is up by more than actual attendance is though. People aren't necessarily going back in droves, but premium screens and higher prices are driving a lot of this revenue. Now would actually be a great time for theaters to drop ticket prices. More people would show up and overall ticket sales would increase .. but of course they'd never do that.

@DogattorneyI’m glad you mentioned this because Digger’s biggest drawback was its marketing and Wildwood was always framed like “support this dying industry”.

Hollywood didn't just have multiple hits, they finally had *product*. The pipeline was so dry for so long due to the pandemic shutdowns followed by the strikes. You need a healthy supply of different types of movies to attract different types of audiences week after week. That is what keeps moviegoing alive and movie theaters financially afloat. And yes, a few billion dollar hits don't hurt. :)

You can't say this year's movie revenue is super high right after acknowledging that the cost of going to see a movie in a theatre has ballooned. You do see the obvious gaslight in that, right? More importantly, it's not just the Cinema corporation's fault, it's the whole price-of-everything's as well. As you can see in the comments, there still are a handful of theatres that charge way cheaper, and if you look online you'll find there actually are enough of those theatres to affect the reported average price, which in turn creates a disingenuous picture of how bad it is right now. Where I live (Vancouver), if I want to see a movie by myself and I pick the least fancy screen, after factoring in all inside and outside costs it becomes a $50-70 experience. 20 years ago it was $20ish.

I've seen a bunch and still have more to see. If you're considering seeing Wildwood, do it, it's the most impressive, wildly imaginative stop-motion animation ever conceived. And it's a nice story! Based on a book by one of my favorite musicians, Colin Meloy

I also think it’s the experience. I think some movies who don’t have an IMAX or Dolby showing is less likely to do well (in some cases) because people want to get a better quality experience then the regular Laser showing.
