Did you know it started with one cut?
35 mm film is the most commonly used film gauge for motion pictures photographed on film; its strips are 1.377 inches (34.976 mm) wide, and the standard movie frame is four perforations long on both edges, giving 16 frames per foot. The 35 mm width, originally specified as 1 3/8 inches, was introduced around 1890 by William Kennedy Dickson and Thomas Edison, using film stock supplied by George Eastman. Dickson used the transparent 70 mm celluloid film supplied for Eastman Kodak cameras in 1889 and 'simply slit this film in half'; it was initially developed for the Kinetoscope, a one-person viewer, and the image was still of high quality even when magnified while being more economical. Edison claimed exclusive patent rights to the design of 35 mm motion picture film with four sprocket holes per frame until a court judgment in March 1902 invalidated his claim. Film 35 mm wide with four perforations per frame became accepted as the international standard gauge in 1909 and remained by far the dominant film gauge until the advent of digital.
