The Arab slave trade did not survive for centuries because merchants simply sat in distant markets waiting for human beings to appear. It required capture. It required raiders, armies, frontier warfare, caravan networks and intermediaries capable of tearing people out of African communities and feeding them into markets across the Sahara, Red Sea and Indian Ocean worlds. Arab and Maghrebi raiders and merchants were part of that machinery, and pretending otherwise is historical laundering. And yes, RELIGION BELONGS IN THIS CONVERSATION TOO.
Islam spread across much of Africa through trade, scholarship, migration and the voluntary conversion of rulers and communities, but that is not the whole story. Alongside peaceful expansion existed military conquest, jihads and the establishment of Muslim states in which non-Muslim populations could become targets of warfare, capture and enslavement. In West Africa, historians document Muslim states that expanded through jihads while capturing enormous numbers of people from predominantly non-Muslim communities; some captives were kept as laborers and concubines, others were exported north across the Sahara.
Across wider African frontiers, religious identity could help determine who belonged inside the protected community and who could be treated as a legitimate captive. That is the history people keep trying to sanitize: FAITH, EMPIRE, COMMERCE and SLAVERY DID NOT ALWAYS TRAVEL SEPARATELY. Sometimes THE PREACHER, THE CONQUEROR and THE MERCHANT moved through the same expanding world, ONE SPREADING BELIEF, another extending POLITICAL POWER, another CALCULATING THE PRICE OF THE CAPTIVES produced along the way. No, that does not mean every conversion was forced or every Muslim was a slaver. It means the fairy tale that the faith expanded everywhere through nothing but peaceful persuasion is INCOMPLETE. BLOOD AND SAND refuses incomplete history. If armies conquered, SAY IT. If raiders captured Africans, SAY IT. If religious categories helped justify who could be enslaved, SAY IT. If merchants profited afterward, say that too. AFRICA DOES NOT OWE ANYBODY A SANITIZED VERSION OF WHAT HAPPENED TO HER PEOPLE. #uyiosael
