Interestingly, if you watch the entire thing you're not getting the full picture either and while I know no movie or series is fully accurate there's a stark difference between portraying a hypothetical tank fight and depicting actions and motivations of actual historical persons.

Winters himself admitted he knew about the NCOs mutiny (it was just a handful of them btw, not a majority like the show implies) and he allowed it to happen to get Sobel out of the picture.

It's not an easy discussion because this series is pretty much revered, but it's mainly based on Winters' and Webster's accounts compiled by a historian who turned out to be a plagiarist, not to mention a possible liar (Eisenhower interviews). Its portrayal of history is more skewed than people realize.

@jackmatuszykagreed, platoon crumps them all though, its just older and not most peoples favorite setting. stands to reason a vietnam vet directed it himself. Saving private ryan has really bad tactical showcase though, the scene where they assault the machine gun was completelly brontosaurus level of planning. and theres scenes where germans run out in the open one after the other clearly being able to see the guys in front of them getting dropped, not providing cover fire, just running out into the open with no clear objective

Sobel wouldve been shot down along side everyone on that plane. Meehan would’ve led Easy Company

He would have died on D day. His plane was shot down and Meehan went in his place. RIP Meehan.

Allegedly, Sink was in agreement with the NCO's who "mutinied", especially after the Fence cutting incident. Hence the reason that only 2 of the NCO's were actually "punished" with demotions back to Private and transferred out of Easy. the rest were demoted one rank and sent back to their men.

There was no way execution was even on the table, not by a unilateral decision by an RCO, not in 1944. of the 140ish servicemembers executed, almost all were for murder and/or rape, and one for desertion. sure, punishment such as demotion, dishonorable discharge, kicked out of the paratroopers, etc, but I've always found that line "i ought to have you all shot" to be so ridiculous given the "crime" and the time it happened.

I can't watch it with all the historical inaccuracies and liberties that Hanks in Ambrose took it was a disgrace

How have I watched this show several times and not realized that was Stephen Graham.

I think Sink's logic was the Sobel's ability to train men was simply exemplary, but while the NCOs were wrong, the fact they did what they did at all speak to an immense lack of confidence in their company commander, Sobel. Regardless of whether or not that lack of confidence is justified, you can't have NCOs who distrust their officers to that extent. Under normal circumstances, he'd have them all demoted and reassigned to other units, but there wasn't enough time for that, so he just replaced Sobel. It's much easier to replace a single officer than a dozen NCOs

I witnessed it many many times. Usually it’s NCOs though. Dog shit company 1SGT guess what you are now a Battalion SGM.

@Kylav1996nothing unifies a group of men like a hated superior. Sobel was a good drill sergent, a great one even. He trained them and drilled them into a formidabke unit. He wasnt a good field commander though.

Imo anyone like Sobel shouldn't be part of ANY professional organisation. Never mind one as critical as the military.
