That's right. Too much of anything is a bad thing and we're getting it with horror movies about trauma. If you're a good horror movie about trauma that's good but the fact that it's become a running theme makes it tiresome. There has to be a balance. Thank goodness for Cregger.

The problem is, I don't want horror movies to be just dumb mindless entertainment. I've had people argue with me and tell me, that's what all movies are supposed to be. They're just supposed to be mindless entertainment, I don't want that. Yeah, they can be entertainment. But I don't want dumb mindless entertainment, I want horror movies that are going to make me think and challenge me. I want horror movies that are going to make me scared to go home and go into my room in the dark and go to sleep. I want horror movies to really hit me. To make me question things. I don't want something that's just gonna be a bloodbath, people dying and a lot of fun stuff like that, I don't want that. I want moves like The Exorcist and The Ring and The Conjuring. I don't need 5 insidious movies that are all the same. I don't need torture porn. I don't need movies that are just full of bloody chaotic violence. I want stories, I want characters. I want some psychological torture and drama

I think light, fun horror works great as a theatre experience or watching with a group of friends.

Elevated or intellectual horror typically works best when you watch it solo or you're in the specific mood to watch it.

A lot of people are talking about "Hereditary," but I think what really kicked off this style of horror was "The Babadook" a few years earlier. (Also, not for nothing, "The Haunting of Hill House" came out a few months after "Hereditary" and was also - quite successful entry in the Horror Therapy genre.)

The "emotional trauma introspection time" is time padding and time padding keeps sfx budget down, which keeps costs down, which is the whole point of horror movies. Low cost, High profit margin. Ka-ching!
Time in horror movies used to be padded by "sexy time with teens", but that is problematic.

What about romantic horror? That's always good for a date night. Crime horror is good for a bro's night out. Comedic horror is good for when you don't really want to watch horror. Or you could see whatever comic book/video game IP adaptation is coming out that week. I'm trying to think if there are any other kinds of movies worth seeing... Nope. That's it. Horror and children's entertainment. This is the world we've created.

Thank you. My god, it's difficult to go on the internet anymore. Unfortunately, in terms of the general public, I think they've crossed an intellectual threshold past which there's no possibility of returning. Most people either don't realize or won't let themselves believe it, but we've entered an era where the public is not only completely indifferent toward the arts (perhaps for the first time in the history of our species), they're also antipathetic toward the idea of intellectual exertion of any kind, an attitude you also seem to have encountered. In order to encounter people with actual interests and passions (other than playing video games while watching sports and trying to scroll through social media) you really have to engage in a prolonged search, because passions have become weird fringe pursuits. Asking the average person on the street what their interests are, aside from those mentioned above, they'd probably look at you blankly for a while before replying, "Myself. Or making money." Popular culture used to provide a general social context before it was destroyed by the internet: the idea that you would watch the same media as a five-year-old kid would be unacceptable, and if you happened to mention your entertainment preferences to anyone, they would let you know what you were: a fucking moron. But now children and adults no longer represent distinct demographics. The average adult, at least in America, is the intellectual equivalent of a preteen child. All of this is to say that, as regards cinema, the average person's taste is directly opposed to that of the critical establishment, and the traditional metrics of successful art: thematic depth; stylistic innovation; narrative complexity; etc. I'd argue that the average person is less sensitive to nuance and less capable of interpreting the world around them than at any point in modern history, maybe reaching back centuries. One of the manifestations of this intellectual devolution is the decades-long stranglehold children's entertainment has had on the entertainment industry. In order for modern audiences to show any interest in a film featuring non-superheroes, those characters have to be dropped into a haunted house where they're butchered alive. The popularity of horror (usually bad horror films) is just another feature of the adolescent mindset that seems to have permanently gripped today's adults. You gorge on kid's superhero slop and "get serious" with a horror movie that nobody will remember next year. Don't let mom and dad catch you watching or you're going to be so grounded. Then it's time for the usual ten-hours of video games and scrolling through social media before bed. I'm sure glad I wasn't able to experience the Sixties and Seventies.

Resident evil was so awesome. It’s not perfect but it is such a good time. I personally wasn’t too crazy about the ending (the last 10 to 15 minutes) but there’s no ending that could be bad enough to make me not absolutely love the previous 80 minutes that were pure fun. The scares worked for me, the comedy worked for me (it is Zach Cregger, of course) and I will probably be seeing it again, or at least saving that money and buying the disc.

This is true except that option always still exists…basically anything by radio silence hits the mark they set here, malignant was an homage to gallo films, heart eyes was a modern slasher, the monkey was pretty zany, basically all of Nicolas cage’s recent work fits into this, five nights at Freddy’s, terrifier…these are just off the top of my head, so you can say you only pay attention to the acclaimed horror films so they feel that way, but you’d be wrong to say it’s categorically what horror has been now

I abandoned most newer horror movies years ago because I'm not entertained by being stressed out and I got continually frustrated yelling at victims with no self-preservation skills. The only horror movies I've truly liked are ALIEN and THE THING but I discovered them when I was much younger and open to the horror genre, though I do find the recent FRANKENSTEIN and NOSFERATU reboots to be interesting. I watched recent video essays on HEREDITARY and MIDSOMMAR and I decided those movies would F me up in the head if I watched them. Feels like the real world's already turning into a horror movie...
👍 12026/09/21
@hendrsb33
@hendrsb33YouTube
My absolute favorite horror movies are ALIEN and THE THING. ALIEN I love for the sci-fi setting and a creature that, in 1979, was completely original and kept in the shadows. THE THING was about paranoia with an intelligent creature that could kill and imitate its victims. What both movies had were characters, though backgrounds unexplained, that were relatable to me and I cared about them even though I knew not all of them were going to survive. The other quality both movies had were untenable situations where the protagonists couldn't escape; they had to deal with the extraterrestrial horrors as best they could with whatever weapons they had. Neither movie tried to explain where their creatures came from, leaving a lot for the imagination to ponder. Lastly, both movies were helmed by directors at the top of their game.

Some notable horror movies slip through the cracks like THE SHINING, DOCTOR SLEEP, SINNERS and maybe a few others but I'm not into slashers, supernatural/paranormal, gore or found footage. Most of them I can't relate to the characters, situations or they creep me the F out in a way that make me question my reality. Give me some of the old stuff form the 50's, 60's and 70's.

It's because the filmmakers who got that elevated horror wave started were inspired by old intellectual, moody thematic horror like carnival of souls and hour of the wolf and now instead of that inspiration, elevated horror being a trend is the inspiration to make the movie. This movie also has some themes of the whole he was unsure about having a kid as his gf is pregnant, and then later he decides that he does actually want to have the baby. And then he ends up going through the maternity ward that's been infected. But yes, it's not the central or main theme of the horror of the movie. I do agree in general that for a while there they were making a lot of elevated horror about trauma where every a bunch of movies had them. And it was getting a little oversaturated. It's nice to have a big variety of genres within the horror genre

"A widow, living in the remote forest learns the truth of her dead husband..."
"A young man, addicted to pain killers, goes on a retreat with loved ones..."
"A mother, who's daughter was taken from her by mysterious forces over 10 years ago..."
"A young girl, taking care of her terminally ill grandmother..."
- I'm so sick of having to deal with these depressing schmucks in these horror movies. ...Give me 1000 more Resident Evil, Return Of The Living Dead (R.I.P. If the acting is good and characters are well written, you can send the story in any direction and pull it off successfully. Slow burns are a great way to build suspense and build the world. There’s more to a good film than what you’re being shown, it’s HOW it’s being executed.

If you actually follow horror, you'll realize that the "horror as trauma allegory" trend is well in the past by now, and the genre is seeing an explosion of variety and creativity it hasn't in decades. Just in the past year and a half we've had 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Sinners, Obsession, Weapons, Bring Her Back, Frankenstein, Hokum and most recently Resident Evil. All very distinct films from one another that use horror in various ways to explore different themes. And if you expand the timeframe the list gets exponentially longer. The 2020s are a new golden age for horror cinema, and showing no signs of slowing down.

Horror typically represents the woes, anxieties and fears of culture and society at a moment in time. It makes sense horror went this way, as we see a rise in therapeutic experiences and the age of information. Without a doubt, the studios look at what’s selling (Hereditary, etc) and attempt to replicate, but they’ll also switch it up right-quick once that sub-genre stops financially producing, as the audiences no longer feel connected to the underlining trauma these films are to represent. “Obsession” being a huge hit wasn’t surprising, when you look at the constant male vs female discourse happening right now. But def ready to get back to goofy horror… can we collectively be in that mindset please 😅

@vestanpance99 Yeah, so a healthy industry offers different styles, rather than going all in on a single trend. Unfortunately, instead we often get studios going all in on trends that seem safe to invest in, leading to the trend>fatigue>next trend situation. I think, though, horror is also the film genre that allows for the elevation of small budget indie projects into mainstream(ish) success, due to it being a genre with an audience that embraces and encourages risks, and with less need for big names to move things forward.

@l@lizbotnick agree. Horror would have to be one of the most flexible and adaptive genres, purely based on the accessible economics involve. And that’s where I think the feedback loop is so effective in horror. We demonstrate fatigue with a prevailing trend, the small production houses adapt quickly and eventually produce things that are really fresh, the larger production houses take note and jump on board, saturation occurs and the cycle continues. But the feedback is critical.

I agree to an extent. The “trauma” horror movies like Obsession, Hereditary, Smile 1 & 2, and Talk to Me are really great movies. The actors all killed it in them. Well written. Good direction. Amazing work all around. But god damn are they depressing. I have to really work myself up to watch some of these movies because they’re so heavy and intense. I guess that makes them great pieces of art. But I’m tired out by the end of them. The real world is horrific enough already in this day and age. Idk. Maybe I’m just getting old because I use to love watching horror movies. Zach Cregger’s films have been some of my favorites though because they’re such a crazy ride.

Absolutely, I agree, but since 1996, there has been largely one or two dominant Horror genres for a period.

We had 6 years of the Neo Teen Slasher Revival from 1996 to 2002

We had the Exploitation/Torture/Home Invasion Revival for 6 years from 2003 to 2009.

We had 6 fucking years of the Jumpscare and Found Footage bullshit from 2010 to 2016.

And since 2017 the two main Horror genres have been Post Horror/Elevated Horror Revival and Legacy Sequels.
