Elevated or intellectual horror typically works best when you watch it solo or you're in the specific mood to watch it.
Time in horror movies used to be padded by "sexy time with teens", but that is problematic.
jennifer lame, the editor of hereditary, now worked with chris nolan three times
So it’s weird to say that all this movie is all fun and not a drag.
Some notable horror movies slip through the cracks like THE SHINING, DOCTOR SLEEP, SINNERS and maybe a few others but I'm not into slashers, supernatural/paranormal, gore or found footage. Most of them I can't relate to the characters, situations or they creep me the F out in a way that make me question my reality. Give me some of the old stuff form the 50's, 60's and 70's.
Knowing that, when you think back on the movie it doesn’t seem so fun.
Very creepy and disturbing
It's very rewatchable
One is actively trying to make you have fun, while the other is looking to 'morally educate you' through a 'cheap' vehicle any director could easily exploit
Also, Resident Evil has themes of fatherhood & abortion baked right in anyway. To the point one of the bigger set pieces near the end is a maternity ward. It doesn’t explore the theme well, but it is there.
Edited, because I meant say "...Burn", not "...Rise"
Films like Kairo , Marebito and Kotoko still hit so hard and fresh !
"After a fatal crash kills her entire family..."
"A couple whose child was the victim of a deadly kidnapping, camping in the mountains..."
"A widow, living in the remote forest learns the truth of her dead husband..."
"A young man, addicted to pain killers, goes on a retreat with loved ones..."
"A mother, who's daughter was taken from her by mysterious forces over 10 years ago..."
"A young girl, taking care of her terminally ill grandmother..."
- I'm so sick of having to deal with these depressing schmucks in these horror movies. ...Give me 1000 more Resident Evil, Return Of The Living Dead (R.I.P. Dan O'Bannon, you created the greatest horror comedy of all time), Re-Animator, etc. where the scares are cause scary shit is happening and the abundance of humor comes from the panic and absurdity of the situation, serving to heighten the tension instead of cut the balls off it.
IMO 🤷🏽♀️
now they’re all about examining some form of trauma.
"You can do both."
We had 6 years of the Neo Teen Slasher Revival from 1996 to 2002
We had the Exploitation/Torture/Home Invasion Revival for 6 years from 2003 to 2009.
We had 6 fucking years of the Jumpscare and Found Footage bullshit from 2010 to 2016.
And since 2017 the two main Horror genres have been Post Horror/Elevated Horror Revival and Legacy Sequels.
