The Irishman, many of the actors are too old for it to work for me and it was way too heavy on narrating everything instead of just showing it. I also find the pacing to be extremely inconsistent and weird emotional weights to certain scenes that feel forced or are completely missing.

Sinners for me. It has such high praise for things and I don't understand why lol. Actors have played split roles before, vampires have been done a million times and it's not like it had some crazy spin on them. There's pretty important plot holes, some of the writing is god awful like all of the sexual dialog is as if a 16yr old high school student wrote it. I don't know what it is about the movie but everyone loved it to bits and I absolutely hated it.

It’s almost as valid as you can get. You like something that inspires your imagination. Good things usually inspire the imagination of many or most people. Not 100% (90% hah). If he don’t like it he don’t like it. We can maybe have half a fight once he says x movie is better than y lol.

@FearfulSludgeBoy Yes, Blade Runner can compete with Interstellar in the aspect of emotional core, but I also enjoy science fiction that leans towards real science, so I prefer Interstellar.

As for Arrival, it was a cool concept based on a real phenomenon, but it's too exaggerated, and I don't find it as emotionally touching as Interstellar.

But hey, they are all good movies, and it's all about personal preference.

Whose fault is it then? No one held him at gunpoint and said “you better report that you don’t like this”. He didn’t like the movie. The huge problem here, is that people don’t really watch anything to enjoy it. They watch stuff to develop an opinion to regurgitate. That’s why you don’t like what he said. He doesn’t like a good movie, and he has no real reason for it. This is how everyone consumed media pre-social media. If you said you didn’t like something, you never had to prove in court why. And your taste was rendered meaningless. At best, you can make the argument, becuase this is his profession, he HAS to have a more educated take than that. That’s really all I’ll give you. He made the mistake of saying something normal.

If you want an emotionally resonant story that doesnt opt for grand scale or spectacle, Paul Thomas Anderson is right there.

And movies I can't stand, anything Wes Anderson minus Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest, an unfortunate example of a victory lap director with no originality to offer.
QT's latest 2 were in a similar pretentious hole.
Nominate most of the MCU, what a blundered and anti-intellectual (ironically named) intellectual property. Removing urgency removes the weight of writing/script/equilibrium (the most important and intentional or specific idea that informs how events happen)

@joshevans3421 It's been a long time since I watched it (and it's not like I wanted to see it twice) so some of the details are fuzzy for me. I just remember being so irritated that the time travel stuff is just FLAGRANTLY wrong and bad, using multiple rulesets completely interchangeably while having the audacity to have the characters in-universe be like "boy isn't time travel silly, we can't make sense of it at all."

It's not a movie that deserves to be anywhere near as smug as it is about how unseriously it takes its own plot and the rules of its universe. Even more irritating the critics and plenty of normal viewers were just like "Huh oh well, guess it DOESN'T have to make sense, what a clever film."

That sort of attitude works for something like Doctor Who that's already pretty silly and just kinda doing its own thing. But for a "gritty, realistic, grounded" time travel movie you have got to at least TRY to make the shit make sense.

I mean, people are upset because the movie has a lot of great things in it, but none of his critiques were bad. It does spoon feed you heavy-handed themes through dialogue. It does spend very little time on getting to know and care about the characters as full people. "You don't have an emotional connection when he sees his daughter growing up?" For me recently, Obsession. It's a great movie. And at first I did like it. But the more I contemplated it, the 2 women were the only good characters, and they get the worst outcomes, being killed and (probably legally) being held responsible for being a murderer. People have 0 literacy these days. Nolan’s message in interstellar was not ‘love saves the universe’ that explanation was Anne Hathaway's character’s way of rationalizing the incomprehensible nature of what they were facing. She knows they are dealing with phenomena that are radically beyond their ability to understand. Love as humans is something fundamental and easy to understand and was the driving force of much of the decisions these characters made, so the point isn’t that it’s some cosmic force but that it’s something fundamentally human that drives their decisions. It even turns out she’s completely wrong because most of the circumstances surrounding Cooper and Brand are being manipulated by entities that are likely future humans, who in turn helped them out of, presumably, compassion.

The tesseract scene and the Cooper-Murph reunion scene are two of the most emotional scenes in any movie I’ve watched. The emotions of the father-daughter relationship are the core of the movie. I understand criticism for other aspects of the movie but not feeling an emotional connection makes zero sense to me
