In Arabic, كَأَنَّ is used to describe something by comparing it to something else. It often means “as if” or “as though.”
الْوَلَدُ أَسَدٌ
“The boy is a lion.”
كَأَنَّ الْوَلَدَ أَسَدٌ
“As if the boy were a lion.”

Notice how الْوَلَدُ becomes الْوَلَدَ after كَأَنَّ.
