Can kindness make up for shallow storytelling?

In my Klara and the Sun (2026) movie review, I explore why Taika Waititi's adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's beloved novel has plenty of heart but struggles to explore its deeper themes.

Starring Jenna Ortega and Amy Adams, this science fiction drama tackles grief, spirituality, artificial intelligence, and what makes us human.

While the film oversimplifies some fascinating ideas, Jenna Ortega brings an innocence and warmth to Klara that makes the experience enjoyable.

Kindness doesn't excuse shallow storytelling. But sometimes it makes shallow storytelling more enjoyable.

I didn't necessarily embrace Klara and the Sun, but I gave it a hug. Isn't that enough?

I didn't love Klara and the Sun, but I appreciated its heart. Sometimes a movie doesn't have to be great to offer something enjoyable. Have you seen it? And if you've read the book, how did you feel about the adaptation?

I had to read this as one of summer readings for school and it was okay. I’ll most likely watch the movie because it does seem sort of interesting.

I thought the movie was good. The characters and themes of the movie were good. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

Watched the movie and liked it a lot… I don’t get the criticism - the book is a lot deeper but the movie’s heart (as you put it) warmed me …

Yes! It had less time than the book to explore the themes so it feels a bit rushed but everything is there!

I completely appreciate your perspective! I saw those deeper themes too, but felt the film didn't explore them as fully as it could have. Still, I really appreciated its heart and kindness. Rather than rewatching it, though, I think I'd prefer to read the book and explore those ideas more deeply! Appreciate you!

Haha, maybe we are! 😅 But that's part of the fun of watching movies for me. We all connect with stories differently, and I love hearing those different perspectives. Sometimes a movie is worth digging into, even when we don't all agree!
