After Puyi was enthroned as the puppet emperor of Manchukuo, a grand banquet was held in celebration. But Empress Wanrong was deeply averse to it—she had never approved of Puyi's decision to serve as a puppet ruler under the Japanese. At the banquet, while the guests danced and chatted to the sound of a Strauss waltz, Wanrong withdrew alone to a corner, tore petals from white flowers one by one, and stuffed them into her mouth, tears streaming down her face in a trance-like state, utterly out of place amid the festivities. She knew the enthronement was nothing but an absurd farce—Puyi was merely a puppet in the hands of the Japanese, stripped of any real power. When Puyi angrily confronted her for embarrassing him in public, Wanrong casually toyed with the flowers in her hand—she had long seen through the whole charade, while Puyi remained lost in his self-constructed imperial dream.
