When knowing the amount of morphine already given can either save or kill the patient, the medic has a good reason to yell at them.

They were taught in basic training for rendering first aid to pin the syringe on the jacket so you could tell how much had been administered. Not doing this was a rookie mistake.

@osmolindqvist1567Except that both Winters and Welsh were veteran officers who'd been part of the company/battalion since it was first created including both of the airborne drops into Normandy and the Netherlands. That's why Doc Roe was angry, he needed to know how much morphine Heyliger had received so he wouldn't accidentally kill him but didn't because in the heat of the moment the two officers who both should have known better made a dumb mistake with not saving the empty morphine sticks.

You can't be serious right? He's the medic. If anyone has the right to be pissed about that it's him, and the military recognises that. How many painkillers you give a guy matters if they want to save the guy. How will the medic know if he can administer more anaesthetic or other medication if you tell him you don't know how much anaesthetic the patient was already given? And from the sounds of it they weren't supposed to give that much morphine

You would think that a guy from Wyoming would have been raised around firearms his entire life and he would know to confirm before shooting at what's in front of him.

I'm just south of the Wyoming border, raised around guns my entire life, and I don't think I'd have shot that fast.

I'm a medic in Finnish Army Reserv and I too would give such lecture to anyone right here. Medics have the right to speak past ranks as it's crucial to our line of work.

Also there's some useful tools to change officers minds, at least over here in Finland us medics have the right to order ANYONE we suspect that might be suffering a heat stroke to pull their pants down and assume "the receiving position" for core temperature reading RIGHT ON THE SPOT. Needles to say that's a very nifty method to persuade anyone into nearly anything. 😂

Super nervous sentry (replacement on his first night on watch) calls to them for the password. Both _officers_ apparently forgot it and try "hey you know it's us" but before they can get halfway through the kid panics (these two indistinct figures aren't giving him the password!) and shoots. Then they start yelling in english and it dawns on the kid that he fucked up.

That's the show's version at least. Going by the accounts of people who were there the sentry was an experienced veteran rather than a fresh replacement, which puts the incident in a slightly different light.

His nerves could have been shot, who knows how long he'd been operating, there's a reason you rotate people out and sometimes that isnt enough. Soldiers are still human, mistakes can and will happen and doubly so if you run people hard.

Docs on duty can yell at the president himself for getting in their way.

Any officer trying to pull rank on a doc for doing doc things is going to very quickly have his behavior corrected. Medics may formally exist within the traditional rank structure, but in practice, they cease to exist in that rank structure when carrying out their duties.

If they're just going about general soldierly duties, that's one thing. But medics are such a specialized knowledge and skill set with such high risks that really only other medics can boss them around when it comes to medical care of troops.

So, no. You wouldn't have threatened doc with consequences. You would have said: "Understood doc, my mistake. I won't make it again, doc."

Well, the more intelligent amongst us are impressed by the acting ability of people from other countries. Does it ruffle your red and white striped feathers that Americans were not chosen for the roles.

General Thomas 'Stonewall' Jackson was shot by his own men who fired immediately after issuing their challenge, and when his staff yelled at them to cease fire; the officer commanding the sentries screamed 'It's a damned Yankee trick! Fire!' And Jackson was hit three times. The officer was convinced it was an attacking Union cavalry force, seeing a squadron of cavalry where there were only a few men.

Contrast with General Nathan Bedford Forrest who accidentally rode into the Union lines, and was politely told of his error and pointed in the right direction. He thanked the Yankees, saluted them, and rode to his own camp.

Strange things happen in war.

Even veterans get jumpy.
How much you can call the 101st veterans when they had never seen combat before D-Day and had only fought a handful of times before being withdrawn from Normandy is debatable. If anything, the men who experienced Normandy, returned to England and then were dropped into Holland had even more reason to be jumpy than the replacements; they were aware of the dangers.

And at this point in the war, both Winters and Welsh were highly combat-experienced officers who definitely knew how to render aid to a casualty. But this one rattled them. It was in a supposed safer area and was due to friendly fire…cognitive dissonance set in

Medics...."Doc"...outranks everyone. Officers may have the plan, grunts might do the heavy lifting, but their jobs are to fight.

Doc's job is first and foremost to see that they make it home.
