I 100% agree that that Spider-Man homecoming is better than Avatar Ang: The last Airbender movie because it sucks. But homecoming is still not good

Oh my...the horror of a character developing their skills and abilities in real time, instead of being some imagined idealistic punchy punchy kicky kick type that is supposed to win all of their fights.

Bro, Spiderman is literally like 15 in that movie and his whole character journey is understanding that there are just some things he does not know how to handle. Say what you will about him being Iron Boy Jr or whatever, but Stark sums it up perfectly. "If you are nothing without the suit then you shouldn't have it". That scene with him buried in the rubble crying for help before lifting it off himself wouldn't hit nearly as hard if he didn't have that journey throughout the movie. God forbid a character is allowed to develop instead of just having flashy action for the sake of it.

Of course the powerscaler's point for the movie being bad is a character struggling and showing weakness. Power scalers only like easily consumable shows/movies with simple characters that never struggle. They base how much they like a character on how strong the character is or "aura". Character flaws, character arcs, or character struggle are too complicated of concepts for their rotted brains.

This is what pisses me off about this new wave of film criticism (coming from a very specifc but also large demographic): being angry that spiderman doesn't punch enough is not good faith criticism. If you just want to smash your action figures together, go do that. Action figures are dope. But that's not how the quality of a story is measured. Thats just not how storytelling works. It bums me out how validated this way of thinking has become.

I completely agree with this I've been saying this since the movie came out. He was already an established hero by the time this movie happened. In civil war he grabbed Bucky's arm and was moving it around like it was nothing but he kept losing to Scrubs in his own movie.

These guys do not understand character development. Homecoming is better than all of the previous Spiderman movies without debate. I grew up on the raimi movies but can we admit how much nostalgia is carrying those in every debate? They were great for the time but that doesn't mean they are better than honestly any of the mcu spiderman movies

i really feel like they didn't understand that in that movie peter is a 15 year old, who only had his powers for some months, and never really been in a fight before going to the airport to help tony and so he does what he thinks is better and that is webbing up the people and the fact he is still learning, like this is partly why i had alittle bit of an issue with tobey and andrew they didn't really learn how to be a superhero really and fight, they just was good at it from the jump

Everybody who's shitting on Spider-Man homecoming. Please remember Spider-Man has only technically been Spider-Man for about maybe a year at that point so he was absolutely still afraid of heights climbing the Washington monument. So yes, he was still learning how to be Spider-Man

They call homecoming bad but if you rewatch homecoming all the way up to BND including infinity war and End game, you can see massive character development with Peter that’s why I love homecoming so much because it wasn’t about Peter being spiderman it was for him to understand his responsibilities because he’s still a 15 year old kid

I rewatched all the Holland movies and if anything, I came away even more confident in what I felt in first viewing.

Homecoming is solid but didn't wow me, Far From Home is a bad film propped up by a very good villain and ending, No Way Home is half a good movie and Brand New Day is an excellent movie.

The biggest issue with Hollands Spider-Man movies pre Brand New Day is the absurd amount of humour that just undercuts so much of the drama.

Before Brand New Day, they were also very blandly shot and had very few scenes I would ever remember fondly.

Homecoming was realistic. It’s a high school kid trying to figure out, navigate and mature with the gift he’s been given, didn’t just figure it out and master it over night. Tobey and Andrew’s movies individually may be better but as a trilogy and a collection toms has everything, homecoming was pivotal in creating the masterpiece he is now

I like homecoming, but I will say that, despite the writers not wanting to do another Spider-Man origin movie, it felt like they didn't entirely know how not to make it feel like an origin movie, if that makes sense. Like there's nothing wrong with him struggling or losing fights, but every major fight in the movie made it seem like this was Peter's first real outing as Spider-Man, even though its established that he's been Spider-Man for a few months. Like he did very well for himself in civil war, but he couldn't get his shit together in his own movie? He's been shown to already be swinging around and hanging out in high places, but when he's on the monument, he's suddenly consciously feeling the gravity of being so high up? They don't redo his origin, but it still feels like an origin movie, he's depicted as being so much greener than he probably should be.

Tobey doesn't beat Doc Ock at the end of spider-man 2 either, which I'd like more if it was just spidey having a heart to heart... I don't love that the villain is actually AI in the robot arms. Doc Ock is the hero, he overcomes the evil AI arms and sacrifices himself to stop them.

This is why I can't take these people seriously. To say it's the worst Spider-man movie but get on their knees for TASM 2 is just insane work lol

Homecoming does a perfect job of what life would be like if you A: suddenly gained superpowers B: had Tony Stark as an acquaintance and C: were 15 years old and trying to balance being a vigilantee and still have grades good enough to get you into MIT. The whole point of the movie is him not being a good fighter, not being a good spiderman, and not knowing what he is doing. The whole point is the geowing pains, learning by way of failure, being overwhelmed with not only the pressure of all the responsibilities but also a literal calapsed building on top of him. The whole point is for you to recognize the growth from Homecoming to Brand New Day.
