Did you know the Arab slave trade stretched across roughly 1,400 years, making it one of the longest-running systems of human trafficking in recorded history? Long before European ships transformed the Atlantic into a highway of human misery, Arab and other Muslim-world slave networks were already carrying Black Africans north across the Sahara, east through the Red Sea and out across the Indian Ocean into Arabia and beyond. For generation after generation, millions of African men, women and children were captured, purchased and transported through brutal commercial networks where human beings were reduced to merchandise. Women were heavily sought for domestic servitude and sexual exploitation as concubines, while many young African males faced the additional horror of castration before being sold as eunuchs. The Sahara itself became part of the cruelty: captives were forced through immense heat, thirst, exhaustion and journeys that historians describe as frequently fatal. And this was not some brief medieval episode that disappeared centuries ago. Parts of these slave systems persisted deep into the modern era; slavery was not legally abolished in Saudi Arabia and Yemen until 1962. Fourteen centuries. Generations born, captured, sold and forgotten. Yet when the history of African enslavement is discussed, this chapter is too often reduced to a footnote. BLOOD AND SAND refuse that silence. We cannot demand that the world remember one chain while pretending another never existed. The desert may have swallowed their footprints, but it must never be allowed to swallow their history. #uyiosael
