AFRICAN, WAKE UP! YOUR HISTORY DID NOT BEGIN WHEN EUROPEAN SHIPS ARRIVED ON YOUR SHORES! LET US FOLLOW THE TIMELINE. FROM THE 7TH CENTURY ONWARD, Arab-led empires expanded across North Africa, while slave-trading networks linking sub-Saharan Africa to North Africa and the Middle East developed and expanded over subsequent centuries. African men, women and children were marched across deserts, transported through the Red Sea and sold into captivity. 869–883 CE: Enslaved Africans and other rebels rose against the Abbasid Caliphate in the ZANJ REBELLION, one of the most significant uprisings in the history of slavery. 15TH CENTURY: European involvement in the Atlantic slave trade began expanding, adding another devastating chapter to African enslavement. 1800s: Under Omani rule, Zanzibar became a major centre of slave trading and plantation slavery, where enslaved Africans worked on clove plantations and African women faced exploitation in slaveholding households. 1873: Zanzibar was compelled to close its public slave markets, BUT SLAVERY ITSELF DID NOT END! 1897: Zanzibar introduced broader legal emancipation, although important exceptions remained. NOW PAY ATTENTION TO THIS: 1962! NINETEEN SIXTY-TWO! SAUDI ARABIA AND NORTH YEMEN FINALLY FORMALLY ABOLISHED SLAVERY! Humanity had already entered the SPACE AGE while legal human ownership survived in parts of Arabia! Yet today, mention the ARAB SLAVE TRADE and watch some people rush to minimize, excuse or dismiss this history. WHY THE SELECTIVE MEMORY? African women were sold into sexual servitude. African men endured forced labour. Some enslaved boys were castrated for palace service. Families were separated, and generations lived under systems of human ownership. EXPOSING THESE ATROCITIES DOES NOT ABSOLVE EUROPE OF A SINGLE CRIME! We are not replacing the Atlantic slave trade with the Arab slave trade. WE ARE DEMANDING THE ENTIRE HISTORY! No Arab merchant, European enslaver, African collaborator or powerful empire deserves immunity from historical scrutiny. AFRICAN, IGNORANCE CAN BE CORRECTED, BUT DELIBERATE DENIAL MUST BE CONFRONTED! Our ancestors suffered across deserts, oceans and centuries. THE LEAST WE CAN DO IS REMEMBER THEM ALL. #uyiosael
