Brick knows them well enough to know it wouldn't matter. He would bare his soul to them only to be undermined and ignored again. The Middle played a lot of sad things off as comedy.

Like when they remembered his birthday 3 months late. Since they "passed" on his birthday prior to the one they missed (and maybe more because they don't even know how old he is) the mom promised to let him do whatever he wanted. He chose going to a space con about an hour away. His mom kept trying to gaslight him into wanting to go home, they didn't even get the con. The dad kept trying to make excuses to turn around and was driving slow, till it started snowing. Then they took him to a shoe store where he was told to play with the foot measure while his dad got boots for himself. Brick ends up telling his mom that even if she yells at him it would be special because he feels invisible and like and outsider. So when they go home he gets yelled at for dropping his bag in the hall, out of pity she didn't even do it because she cared it was just to throw him a bone. He goes to his room with a smile. When he expresses his emotions he gets empty promises. When he gives the a simple out he can at least get something that gives him a semblance of happiness.

It shows he wasn't even comfortable enough to open up to his own parents or siblings, and when you realize that aspect it changes your point of view and really does make it hit harder. For some reason some writers who are parents themselves find it humorous to make a child character feel like they have no meaning, not realizing they probably make their own children feel like that on a daily basis. So it really does change your point of view when looking at it without the comedic music or laugh track in the background. It's the same feeling I get from 'Everybody Hates Chris'.

Anybody that finds brick annoying must not have really watched the show. Do NOT compare him to Sheldon. Brick has actual compassion and empathy he is actually a kid who enjoys to read and do semi normal stuff. He’s quirky and honestly might have tics too because he literally said he couldn’t control them and even tried to he would go trick or treating and had a girlfriend. He tried to be normal. He was forgotten and neglected. They always forgot his birthday. He never got Jello lime salad. He always tried to do hobbies or sports his parent wanted him to do. Even though they knew he loved reading books and fonts and newspapers and going to conventions. Brick was genuinely a good character and he was funny. It’s not looks he knew how to cook either cause Frankie rarely cooked they always ate out.

Didn't watch all of the show, but I agree.
He's an autistic, smart, little boy who happened to be born into a "white-trash" Family.
Honestly, I found most of the characters of the show kinda shallow. Brick seemed to be the only one with depth. It's like they put all potential-points for charachter developement into him, and the other characters show some empathy or something more deep of themselves about every 10 episodes.
