Arab travellers reached the Maldives in 947 CE

Arab travellers first reached the islands around 947 CE. The Maldives, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, had been inhabited for millennia. Its 26 atolls stretch across the equator, 750 kilometres from the mainland. Despite this isolation, the capital Malé served as the seat of ancient royal dynasties. The islands maintained a distinct identity and continuous habitation for over 2,500 years. Today, the Republic of Maldives remains a sovereign state in South Asia.
